The Lessons of Tutoring

General, Master Degrees

Last year I began working as a writing consultant at the college I attend. As a tutor, I help students with transfer their ideas from thoughts to paper. Sometimes I help freshmen who have been referred by their professor. Other times I assist students who are writing personal statements for master degree programs online.  The writing center is a free service to the students.

My college is a small liberal arts college and a lot of the students are non-traditional age. Returning to school for a working adult with a family can be very challenging. I’ve found for most students the hardest part of writing is simply getting started. First steps are always difficult. I remember when I visited the college marketing and enrollment services to inquire about night school; I shook throughout the entire interview. Coming from a working class family I never saw college as an option for me.

Luckily though I used the amazing resources my college had to offer and soon will be graduating. Now I’m considering a masters in business information systems. Since I’ve been on both ends of the tutoring experience, I know, for me, tutoring works. Knowledge is a gift when it’s shared.

Engineer No More

Sports

One of my closest friends lost his job in engineering about a month ago. I’ve known him for a long time, and in his line of work that is always a threat, but he usually finds something else pretty quickly. I’ve known him for a little over ten years, and this is the third time it has happened. Of course, once the project has been completed, there isn’t any more work to be done.

It seems like he calls me ever day to see if I want to go golfing. Hey, that can’t happen because I still do have a job. I wish I could, but I don’t have the kind of free time that somebody who is currently unemployed has! What is surprising me is that he is able to find at least one other person to go play with him every single day. Who would have guessed that one?

Today he calls me, and I totally saw the writing on the wall. As soon as I saw who was calling on my caller ID it was like I heard him say it before I answered the phone: “Hey buddy, want to give your new Big Bertha irons a workout today?” But instead of saying that he said “Hey buddy, you’ll never guess what I’m going to do.” If course I said “Let me guess; you’re going golfing” I have to say he threw a real curve ball at me when he told me he was signing up to go to one of the golf colleges.  I guess he is going to start a golf career and teach golf. Hopefully I’ll get some free pointers out of him!
